Before coming to Eau Gallie in 2006, Powers coached the tight ends at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. While there, he worked with Offensive Coordinator Carmen Felus, who is now the head coach at Juniata College in Pennsylvania.

Prior to coaching the tight ends at UT-Chattanooga, Powers was the Assistant Defensive Line Coach at UT-Chattanooga for two years. He was under the tutelage of Jimmy Brumbaugh, who is now the Defensive Line Coach at Syracuse University and Vantz Singletary, nephew of Hall of Fame Linebacker Mike Singletary. He attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 2001-2005. Powers earned his Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science in 2005 and was a three-year starter for the Mocs playing on the defensive front.
